Mathematics is a very interesting subject for some. While others dread the very thought of having to engage in another math problem. This article tries to look at how early math influences the younger generation.
Brain Development and Stimulation
There has been lots of research since the early 1990s about the critical importance of the first months and years of a child’s life. Early stimulation of the child’s brain will prepare the way for later growth and development. The researchers reached to a conclusion that with a lack of stimulation or negative stimulation of the child’s brain makes growth and development extremely difficult.
Arthur J Baroody (1993), was one of the researchers since early days who believed teachers should focus on strengthening a child’s mathematical intelligence from an early stage. In his book, he strongly urges teachers of young children, including teachers of pre school kids; to ensure their curricula includes informal introductions to mathematics. He also recommends identifying and remedying any weaknesses they observe in informal knowledge of the children in their care. His research paper suggests that even though lower – class children had many counting and number skills, they did significantly poorer than middle – class children in solving simple addition and subtraction word problems.
According to research, there are six stages of development, beginning at birth and extending through age four. During this period, the central nervous system is maturing as the child interacts with different experiences. Teachers dealing with these kids should encourage emotional learning, and plan curriculum accordingly.
To assist with this, teachers should be using a “process – oriented” approach to learning –Ensure that children have access to a rich environment that encourages exploration and choices. Children need to learn to choose and focus and move on to make other choices.
Consider using games, playing as an opportunity to integrate all learning processes and skills.
Make learning Math interactive and fun – This combination provides a motivation and a basis for further learning.
Identify and make goals for the specific learning tasks of each stage of emotional development of the child. Such tasks addresses the processes children need to learn on their own.
Focusing on mathematics in early education can lead to more positive outcomes in higher education and beyond. More recently, studies have examined many aspects of early mathematics, ranging from the way young children learn and acquire math skills and knowledge, to the methods early education teachers employ to teach math in the classroom.
